This article discusses the results of a research study conducted to determine the
identification and behavior of nuclear label-retaining cells in the epidermis and oral mucosa.
Renewing tissue such as stratified squamous epithelium is examined for a subpopulation of
stem cells. The researchers hope to identify the slow-cycling cell populations in epithelia as
keratinocytes and demonstrate the abilities of these cells to proliferate.
