The rates of matrix and bone formation and bone resorption were measured histologically in
the tibial diaphysis of thyroparathyroidectomized rats. Compared to control animals, the
rates of matrix and bone formation and bone resorption both were decreased significantly in
rats given 3 Hirsch units of calcitonin every 8 hr for 6 days. The magnitude of the decrease of
resorption was 68%, that of bone formation was 24%, and that of matrix formation was
22%.(Endocrinology 84: 261, 1969)
