Abstract (b) Control thyroid and parathyroid glands were removed from 4 dogs before
perfusion and the remaining glands were then perfused with blood containing 7 or 4 m-
equiv. Ca per litre for 3 h. In glands perfused with the larger amount of Ca acidphosphatase
increased, particularly in the mitochondrion-rich cells, and in the latter α-glycerophosphate
and non-specific esterase were lower than normal. Results suggest that calcitonin is
secreted by the mitochondrion-rich cells.-A. Hepburn.
