The assignment of patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) to diarrhea-
associated(D+ HUS) and atypical D-HUS subgroups(1) is no longer valid (2). In this review,
we use the abbreviation Stx for the Shiga toxin protein (3). To conform with this new
terminology, we use the term Shiga toxin-associated HUS (Stx HUS) for cases either caused
by, or presumed to be caused by, Stx-producing bacteria(Table 1). However, D+ HUS and
