Amoeboid microglial cells purified from primary cultures of embryonic rat brains and
stimulated with bacterial lipopolysaccharides released high amounts of nerve growth factor.
This finding suggests that brain macrophages play a major neurotrophic role during
development, in adulthood, and in the regenerative events that follow localized lesions.
