Abstract
This article focuses on the latest developments in oxygen sensing and oxygen-regulated gene expression. The transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) has emerged as a key regulator of oxygen homeostasis. It consists of HIF-1& b. alpha and HIF-1& b. alpha;/ARNT (aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator) subunits, both belonging to the PAS (Per-ARNT/AhR-Sim) subfamily of basic helixloop-helix transcription factors [32]. Above a critical intracellular oxygen partial pressure, HIF-1& b. alpha; protein is maintained at low and often undetectable levels.
