BACKGROUND: The protease-antiprotease hypothesis proposes that inflammatory cells
and oxidative stress in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) produce increased
levels of proteolytic enzymes (neutrophil elastase, matrix metalloproteinases [MMP]) which
contribute to destruction of parenchyma resulting in progressive decline in forced expiratory
